Forum structure overview
- Please memorize these relationships: A forum holds categories, which hold boards, which hold topics—a.k.a. threads—which hold messages—a.k.a. posts. Once you get this, you should be able to navigate the forum without too much trouble. Where you are presently in the this hierarchy is indicated by the black and white navigation bar seen immediately below the colored banner menu at the page top. For example, you are now here:
- The first message in a topic is called the original post, or OP. All messages following the OP are called replies.
- Each new reply is appended to the end of the topic, that is to say, it will be the last message in a sequence of messages. Thus you can't reply to a particular message directly, but only to the topic as a whole. To reply to a particular message, you must do it by reference. Here are some ways to do that:
- Name the author in your reply - "Tom: I don't agree about drowning cats."
- Quote the author in your reply - Use the Insert Quote icon to bring up a quote field. Anything typed within the field, when published, will be surrounded by the BBC code for a quote box like this: "[quo te]This is the quoted material.[/qu ote]". Or you can just type the code yourself. (Space inserted so you can see what is happening.) Please don't quote entire messages when you only mean to quote a line or two. This is very annoying, because the reader has to figure out what part of the message you are actually replying to.
- Should you wish to lead the discussion in a given topic off the current subject and into another direction—called "forking the thread", which a bad thing for readers—it is much clearer if you simply start a new topic with an appropriate title. You may point to a new topic from an old one by linking:
- Create the new topic, so that it's URL will be available.
- Copy the new URL to the Windows clipboard ([Ctrl-c])
- Paste ([Ctrl-v]) the new URL into a link in a post in the old topic and announce the new topic's subject.
- The OP (only) is equipped with a Subject field, which becomes the title of the entire topic. Plan these carefully as they are all the reader sees in the topic index. The reader should be able to realize the subject matter of any topic by simply reading the title. The author of the OP (or admin) may revise the topic title at any time by editing the OP. If the admin revises your title, it will be so stated in order to prevent mysteries.
- This forum is equipped with a personal message system. PMs may be sent between members without the necessity of revealing their E-mail addresses. Please check for new PMs when you log in.
Some operational facts
- You do not have to register to read or write in this forum, but please do register so that you can be you on a permanent basis (including a pix or avatar as you wish).
- Anyone can start a topic. (Don't worry about messing up; anything can be fixed.)
- Each time Elise posts a new video on YouTube, a new topic, entitled a "video" topic, will be started. To be clear, all other topics, by fiat, are not labeled video topics.
- For general conversation, we all move to the latest video topic. All the older video topics will have a last message directing traffic to the next-newest video topic. (In order to not look like a goofy doofas, please don't continue to post in an older video topic unless it pertains to that video or you wish to follow up on something already discussed there.)
- The latest video topic (as well as a couple of general-purpose topics) are "sticky;" Note 1. Thus readers do not have to look for the latest video topic; it is at the top of the index.
- When created, new video topic OPs will have by design a standard title format and a minimum content requirement, such as having the latest video embedded in it. If you can't figure how to do this exactly, have no fear; the admin will standardize things for you later without mangling your writing too much (so it will at least look like we know what we are doing).
- One topic, the EH Video Index, lists all videos Note 2 and has links to them for reader convenience. (This topic is locked. Suggestions and corrections are appreciated Note 3.
- Topics that are started in the wrong category or forum can easily be moved by admin, and if they are, they will be so marked to eliminate mysteries.
- Topics can be deleted, but that kind of censorship will need to be exercised rarely if the rules are followed.
Forum rules
- Be nice.
- Use family-friendly language.
- Write relevant and revealing topic titles.
- Please fit topics into the proper forum boards.
- Have fun.
- "Sticky" means that a topic will always appear at the top of the topic index for its board until replaced by a newer topic. Once replaced, that topic is un-stickied and becomes just another topic; it floats within the index based on posting activity within the topic.
- At a later time, a second index in the same topic may be started to list links to non-video Webpages about Elise as they are found. If you find any, please send them in.
- Send by PM to CampKohler or by E-mail to campkohler (at) hotmail.com.
