Elise and family descend into the shaft 90 meters at the National Coal Museum Big Pit mine: The WP article says everyone going down has to surrender anything with a battery in it. However, some cell phones are "intrinsically safe,", meaning they can be safely used in flammable atmospheres. So no movies from her down there. Of course 90 meters is nothing compared to the 11-mile trek to the mine face of the Empire gold mine. To be fair, OSHA won't let anyone down there, and even if they did, it is flooded as the pumps were removed and sold off when it closed in 1956. (But to be fair again, even 5.8 million pounds of coal does not begin to stack up against the 5.8 million ounces of gold that came up from it.)

It was very damp down there as there is an underground river that has to be channelled out through corrugated pipes. Many mushrooms. I have a still picture of the old foundry but the above-ground engine room specifically said no photography.

What? No photography? Are they afraid of terrorists?
