Elise and folks visit St. Illtyd's church in Aberbeeg, Wales, about two miles west of home in Pontypool (be careful, there are a half a dozen St. Illtyd's churches scattered all over the countryside): As St. Illtyd's Church parallels St. Illtyd Road(?), you get only a side view. What is the little hexagonal object on the side of the church? Click to enlarge; click Back to return. If the church was undermined in 1927, isn't it still undermined, or did they fix that?

I believe that is a fire alarm. They probably need it for insurance. I think they shored up the church when they renovated. They first renovated in 1943, then I think in 1957 and after they stopped using it it was left to the elements until the late 1990s when Cadw and the Church in Wales came in and excavated and then restored it. So I think it is safe now - especially as all the deep pit mines are now closed.
I found a site that says there is a legend there is a tunnel leading from the church to the valley below and that one night, after the reformation and the raiding of all the previously-Catholic Churches, thieves broke in and stole a golden calf from the church and carried it into the tunnel, where they left it (presumably because it was too big to get out and also because it never existed in the first place). Excavations recently found no tunnels.
I will have to go back in the summer to look at the remains of Castell Taliorum and the Silurian mound. It is pretty close to the 'hidden valley' from another video.
