Yesterday I did a poetry gig in South London with a poetry collective. We did stuff about our grandmothers.
I have been alternating between doing poetry, getting headaches and being a bit miserable the last few weeks. Maybe spring will help, who knows.

I can understand how doing poetry would give headaches, and thus making you feel miserable. If I had the money, I'd hire a rowboat to take me to you, and... Well, I'd figure out something to get you all bright-eyed and bushy-tsiled once again. (Is there a British equivalent to that expression?) ---- Yesterday I finished up an electrical project for my sister and bro-in-law. He has a medium-sized air compressor in the garage that is plugged into an outlet that is on a branch circuit that has other stuff on it in the house. When it is running, the circuit breaker tends to trip, especially on a hot day when the sun is beating down on the electrical panelboard. This is a nuisance, especially when you consider the house is only 10 years old. Luckily, the architect included wiring from the panelboard to the garage for a future electric car charging station. I re-purposed it for a new dedicated 20 amp outlet. I had to go back to Home Depot to exchange the standard beige parts I bought for white ones, because the sis, being a woman, had to have the color match all the other outlets in the place. It's in the garage! It's for an air compressor! Does the color really matter? Evidently so. Anyway, I got it done and so, on hot days, the compressor can now b-r-u-u-u-p-t its little heart out and not trip the breaker. The hardest part of the project was the fact that the plastic outlet box was mounted behind the dry wall, about 7/8" from the wall surface. That meant the outlets would be sunk back into the wall by that amount. How would that work? I solved the problem by buying another plastic box, cutting off 7/8" of its front and gluing it to the front of the existing box, thus bringing the outlets flush like they are supposed to be. Not exactly legal, but it got the job done in a safe manner. ---- *This is not the only weird thing in a house that won architectural awards back then. When my sis was at a friend's house of the same floor plan, she noticed an outlet next to the makeup counter, which would be handy indeed for her hair dryer, etc. She asked if her friend paid extra for this outlet, and no she didn't, which means it would be standard in all houses of that floor plan. What the...? She went home and looked at the pix she took during construction. The outlet box and wiring was there in the wall!!! She then carefully examined the wall and found a bump in the dry wall. They had covered the box and never installed the outlet! So the bro-in-law cut a hole in the dry wall, found the box, and installed the outlet. Yes, professionals were at work here. And the city inspected and approved it.

Last week I went up to my sis's vacation home in Grass Valley, CA to see cousins visiting from Portland, OR (originally Texas, where my dad's side of the family came from). We took went to nearby Nevada City to the Empire Mine State Park and took the tours of the mineyard and owner's cottage. The cottage was 4,000 square feet, which is what you might expect for a man who owned one of the most prosperous gold mines in the U.S. It was built in the Tudor style out of stone, which when heated up on a summer's day, forced the occupants to sleep out on the grass. But it was used only for a couple of weeks a year as a getaway from the owner's mansion, Filoli, in Woodside, CA. When the cottage was built, all the surrounding trees had been cut down for firewood to power the mine's machinery, so period pix of it shows it surrounded by stumps. Since then, all the trees that have grown up in the park are a hundred feet tall and the lawns are mowed to pastoral perfection, so we visitors have a much better view than the owners ever did.
